Announcing the tragic passing of Mrs Wendy Carey

Head Teacher Mrs Rebecca Crean,

I am extremely sad to have learnt of the unexpected death of Mrs Wendy Carey, a much loved and inspirational headmistress at TGS (then known as Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls) between 1990 and 2005.  Wendy Carey passed away in August.

During her retirement Wendy stayed very much in touch with the school and attended events and reunions.  Most recently on 7 March I had the absolute pleasure of spending time with her for a Wendy Carey, Rosemary Joyce and Rebecca Crean, ‘Heads in Conversation’.

Tonbridge Grammar School is setting up a tributes page and we are planning a memorial celebration for Wendy Carey on Saturday 24 January 2026.  I think it would be fitting to celebrate her life and legacy at the school birthday reunion.

Whilst we grieve for her loss, we reflect on her exceptional contribution to education and the many positive ways Wendy Carey touched the lives of generations of young people and educators during her career and school headship.

We send our deepest condolences to her children and grandchildren and to her husband, former TGS bursar, John Johnson.

We shall keep you up to date with arrangements via the alumni community portal TGS Connections connect.tgs.kent.sch.uk.  If you would like to be in touch you are most welcome to contact me or Director of Development and Alumni Relations, Pippa Blackstone pippablackstone@tgs.kent.sch.uk
