Welcoming alumni back to Tonbridge Grammar School forms a key part of the 'Languages at University Programme'

Welcoming alumni back to Tonbridge Grammar School forms a key part of the ‘Languages at University Programme’, a wide range of enrichment events that provide students in years 10, 11 and 12 with the opportunity to learn more about the study of languages at university, courses available, studying languages abroad and wider university life.

Last November Lydia, currently reading German and French at the University of Cambridge, came to talk about the year out she is spending in Berlin as part of her degree and the benefits of completing a work placement abroad while also studying.

In February Annemarie, currently studying a French and German degree in France, came to talk to us about living and studying abroad and the unique mix of subjects that Sciences-Po – a very selective and prestigious university – offers.

Both visits were incredibly well received by the students who had a lot of questions to ask. Some had not considered studying abroad or the opportunities it offers.

The feedback was extremely positive:

“I found the visit really informative, especially as I am thinking of pursuing languages at university. I was intrigued by studying both languages and social sciences, which would give a broad range of relevant subjects available to study and encompass a wide variety of interests. It was also encouraging to think that this was an achievable goal to aspire to, as the student who was giving us the talk was an ex TGS student, who learnt with the same excellent teachers and facilities available to us all at the school.

“It was an invaluable session that has opened my eyes to so many more opportunities that I wouldn’t have otherwise had the courage to explore!
— Jade
“Here at TGS we see language learning as a continuum that goes beyond the classroom and also beyond the Sixth Form. Our alumni are our best ambassadors and it is always a pleasure to welcome them back so they can share they enthusiasm and experiences.
— Mrs Lawrence, Subject Leader for MFL
