I am pleased to see that Ursula has included a photo of our class and has written a lot of what I would say about our time at the school so I won’t repeat that. The teachers I remember with affection are Mrs Easton, who was a very caring First year Form Tutor, Miss Debney too and Miss Moore who initiated my love of languages, especially French. In the Upper Sixth all French A level students had to take part in the Alliance Française essay writing competition and surprisingly I was one of 5 students from the UK who won that year (I think my name was on the Honours Board near the Head’s office, maybe it is still there). The prize was 10 days in Paris with students from all over the world. It was a fantastic experience! I went on to study French and Spanish at Hull University and then taught languages for 35 years.
It is interesting to read the piece about the swimming pool because I remember writing a poem (which was published in the school magazine 1968) about diving into that pool. That is the only poem I have ever had published and I hated swimming!
Another influence on my life was the Christian Union which was very strong at that time. My Christian faith has continued throughout my life and has grown through my time at university, working and retirement. I am very much involved at St Stephen’s church. When I retired I joined Tonbridge U3A and enjoy theatre trips, playing Mah Jong and Spanish conversation.
I am married and have a daughter who lives in Yorkshire with her family. I have kept in touch with 3 friends from school: Ursula Osmond, Kathy Browne (Detsicas) and Gill Walters (Whitehead). They all live in different parts of the country but, I hope, may be able to come to the summer reunion event.
