Meet our Design Technologist, and now Visual Communications Designer, Ella Class of 2020
Why did you choose Design at TGS?
I wasn’t initially sure I could do a creative subject because I didn’t feel confident in fine art, but DT showed me there can be more structured ways to be creative. It felt more logical and accessible to me personally. I enjoyed being able to learn practical skills, engage in creative problem-solving and learn about different materials and processes.
Where did you go next?
I went on to do a Foundation Diploma in Design and Media at Ravensbourne University, then a degree in Graphic Design at Kingston School of Art which included a professional placement year. I graduated in 2025.
What do you do now?
I’m now a Junior Visual Communications Designer at a fashion brand in London. It’s quite a broad role, I get to do print and digital graphics, art direction, animation, retail design - all sorts! I love it.
What did you get from studying Design at TGS?
On top of the course material, DT was the first space I was in where I felt I could actually build a career in something creative, and that it can take many forms. I learned how to articulate myself and communicate my ideas clearly, how to take and respond to (sometimes critical) feedback. Those skills gave me a real advantage later on in foundation and university. It helps you consider the bigger picture and think about approaches others may not.
Why Design at TGS for students choosing now?
It gives you personal and academic skills that apply anywhere you go. Even if it isn’t the main subject on your radar right now, it brings creativity into your timetable and teaches you to think in a different way. It’s so rewarding to be able to actualise your own ideas. I’ve met so many people who took DT and ran with it in so many different interesting directions. It’s a really cool space.
