Sixth Form students were inspired by a visit from alumna Emma, a Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineer

Our thanks to Emma (Class of 2020) who visited to share her post-TGS journey with students studying Geography and Environmental Systems and Societies as part of Green Careers Week. 

Emma explains more:

I studied Geography, Chemistry and Physics at HL in the Sixth Form.  I've always had a keen interest in physical geography and chemistry, as well as an interest in crystals (actually minerals, as my lecturers would later correct me to!), which led to me studying a Bachelors in Geology at Cambourne School of Mines, University of Exeter, and then pursuing a Masters in Surveying and Land/Environmental Management. I currently work as a Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental engineer, specialising in contaminated land and remediation but also getting involved with foundation and basement designs.

"Emma's presentation was excellent and incredibly engaging - with information on university life, in particular Exeter, and studying Geology at university. She also covered careers that you can undertake with Geology and what her work entails, as well as why it was relevant to do this.  Students enjoyed looking at the rocks and fossils".

When TGS alumni visit to talk to students, either in person or online, there is an immediate energy and connection in the room, which is so exciting to watch. Alumni are reminded where it all began for them in the classroom. Students gain a confidence from their school colleagues which inspires their own next steps.  We are so proud of them all.
